God May Not Pay For What He Does Not Order

“Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me.”—Psalms 19:13

The idea behind the word presumptuous is that of being willful. It is when we take matters into our own hands and choose a course of action that God did not direct that we have done presumptuously. Been there, done that, right? It’s so easy to do when all of your life you’re used to taking charge, choosing your own way, and moving forward after taking counsel from the Godhead of me, myself, and I. But David knew this could land one in big trouble. So he prayed, “Protect me, Lord, from my own willfulness.”

One thing you should know if you’re about to embark on a major act of willfulness. Whatever it is you’re about to undertake, don’t assume that God is going to step in and foot the bill for your mistakes. The old adage is true, Where God guides, God provides. But if He doesn’t author it, you can’t expect Him to cover the production costs. Put another way, God may not pay for what He does not order.

Presumptuous sins can be quite costly. The longer one goes on with God, the more He rightfully expects us to tow the line. It’s that little thing called the fear of the Lord. Once you’ve been burned real good by taking an ill-advised short cut, or by hatching your very own Ishmael, you learn the value of waiting on what the Chief Chef has ordered for the table.

So a word to the wise—no matter what it looks like, or how many people are saying “Hurry up!” Wait for the Word of the Lord behind you saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it.”
