“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.”—Ro. 8:26-27

No one knows what is actually going on inside a man better than the spirit of that man. Scriptures observes, “For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him?”—1 Cor. 2:9-11

The spirit within us, our spirit man, is keenly aware of our thoughts, feelings and motivations. And it’s the same with God Himself. Paul goes on to say, “In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” This presents two key facts:

First, the Spirit of God knows exactly what God is thinking about all people, situations, and dilemmas. He knows the mind of God for us including every trial, circumstance and battle we’re experiencing. This is how Jesus could say to Peter, “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.”—Luke 22:31 He knew what was going to come against Peter before the fact. And He also knew the outcome. Peter would fail but return. And after returning, he would “strengthen the brethren.

Second, as Jesus prayed that Peter’s faith would not fail, we are told the Spirit of God intercedes for us in the same way! “…the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.” As Jesus lifted up Simon Peter just before a flood of attack slammed against him, the Spirit of God is praying for you and me according to God’s will. He is praying that our faith doesn’t fail; that we emerge from the trial victorious, ready to encourage others. God is good!
