When the early American settlers came over from England, many of them did so due to the religious persecution they were experiencing under King George. They came to early America for religious freedom.
As the early American government began to form, the churches began to grow concerned that it would follow in England’s steps to stifle religious freedom. Eventually, they brought their concerns to Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson wrote a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association assuring them this would not happen:
“I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.”
There’s the original phrase, “separation of church and state.” It had NOTHING to do with keeping the church out of government, and everything to do with keeping the government out of the church! Anti-Christian forces hijacked the phrase and have used it ever since to hammer the church into silence.
In fact, it was the church’s concerns that brought about the first amendment enshrined in the Bill of Rights: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
In light of this, it’s time for the church to throw off the false muzzle of fear and speak up loud and clear to the issues rocking America. Racism, socialism, and the false, negative narrative being spread about our founding, just to name a few!
