Don’t fall for it …
It’s a popular fundraising technique amongst some out there to take an Old Testament (OT) festival or holy day—like say Passover, first-fruits, year of Jubilee—and raise money on them by making extraordinary promises of blessing if you “sow financial seed” their way.
For example, one well-known television preacher recently declared that, when you don’t give firstfruits: “whether through ignorance or direct disobedience there are consequences.” Then they promised that if you gave, “this year will be the year of recovery and supernatural advancement for you.”
Beloved, don’t you believe it. Here’s why. The OT feasts, festivals, and observances were given by God for one reason only—to point to the coming of Jesus. The Bible couldn’t be more clear:
Colossians 2:16-17
“So don’t let anyone criticize you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating Jewish holidays and feasts or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. For these were only temporary rules that ended when Christ came. They were only shadows of the real thing—of Christ himself.”
The Bible teaches that once Jesus came, God “has made the first covenant (Passover, first-fruits, year of Jubilee) obsolete (out of date and put aside forever)” (Hebrews 8:9).
As Paul wrote, “Christ is the end of the law” (Romans 10:4).
So when a preacher or television personality tells you that some OT festival or holy day is upon us, and then proceeds to promise spectacular blessings on you if you sow a financial seed their way, think:
Why would God especially bless me for giving money to celebrate something He has long ago done away with, and that His Son has replaced? Answer: He won’t!
